about

(First, I want to share a ‘gotta give em credit’ moment. Doesn’t it drive you nuts when you come up with the perfect song title… and then one day you discover the idea has already been fully realized… and done brilliantly. If you too find this title hilariously inappropriate, check out the actual ’The Pop-Up Book of Phobias’ by Gary Greenberg, Balvis Rubess, and Matthew Reinhart. We snagged one. It’s a great ‘coffee table’ book.) :)

Now to the core message behind this song… I had one of those ‘oh crap’ moments recently… the realization that I’m spending way too much time lost in fear, worrying about the world’s future. What can I say. Society seems messed up lately. It feels like everything is foolishly bulldozing toward a brick wall. And I’m having a hard time visualizing any happy endings. We should officially label 2020 as ‘The Year of Absolute Uncertainty’ (and maybe also ‘Not Recommended’).

Fortunately, while I was losing myself to worry, my partner in crime was reading one of my favorite books, ‘Courage’ by OSHO. And she reminded me of one of the primary messages I had forgotten; a comfortable life is a dead life.

We aren’t meant to be safe. We are best suited to experiencing life naked and vulnerable and unsure; and learning from the experiences that result. Society wants us to believe a safe and secure life is a successful life. And there truly is no such thing. There are no guarantees. And struggling to protect who we are and what we have just creates unhealthy attachment, and prevents us from experiences that can help us grow.

Think about this. Are you more likely to seek change when your life is going swimmingly? Or are you going to try to change your situation when everything feels messed up, and you’re unsatisfied with how things are playing out? The answer is pretty logical.

But in these modern times, many of us have achieved (or were handed) relatively comfortable lives. When we have it that good, we don’t want to rock the boat. It’s easy enough to turn a blind eye to injustice and suffering when you have everything you need.

Massive change seems to require a global shift in thinking. We are all in the same boat (some might even suggest ‘hand basket’) together. And it’s pretty evident the current trajectory is not only unsustainable, but it really sucks, and will likely prove dangerous. So in our current circumstance, everyone becomes an advocate for change. We have a lot of unified voices out there right now, speaking up about a better future for all of us. And frankly, we vastly outshine the voice that wants everything to remain exactly the way it is.

Comfortable times don’t cause those kinds of things. So while it seems like a long, hard road ahead of us. Let's be grateful something this drastic has provided us the global opportunity for improvement.

I hope you enjoy my latest uncertainty, ‘The Pop-Up Book Of Phobias’. :)

GrevusAnjl

Welcome to my sonic playground. I don't consider myself a skilled musician. I just sculpt sounds to quiet my mind... and often end up pleasantly surprised. I'm all about joy, and silliness, and staying playful as I (refuse to) grow older. My songs help me remember that. :)

Thank you for taking the time to listen and share in my journey. Best wishes and all my love.
