about

Just over 4 years ago, I created a song called ‘Siren Rising’. I was still pretty new to Soundcloud at the time… so I cautiously kept my liner notes short back then; and my blog was my primary repository for all the esoteric ideas in my head. Unfortunately, my blog never really took off. But I quickly discovered the lengthier liner notes were being well received here (a music/art/writing trifecta), so this was clearly the way to go. :)

Jump to today, and I’m amazed how much this song reminds me of that first piece (thus the title that sounds like a sequel). But now I’m faced with the challenge of taking the root word ‘Siren’, and turning it into a meaningful and positive message.

Let’s be honest. A Siren, by mythological standards, is not necessarily a good thing. We all know the tales of Siren Song luring sailers to their deaths. And the dictionary defines a Siren in more modern terms as ‘a woman who is considered to be alluring or fascinating, but also dangerous in some way.’ So how does one twist that story into a positive message?

I think I have an answer, and it involves undoing some of the core thinking that created that myth. In fact it probably requires undoing a whole lot of myths surrounding women. The myths that women, left to their own devices, are a dangerous thing; a group that needs to be controlled. And it doesn’t take a scholar to realize who wants to do the controlling.

I could speculate at length why men (not all) have had a need to control women since the earliest moments in human history. But it always seems to come down to one thing; viewing a woman as a possession, rather than an equal. And society has created many institutions that perpetuate that thinking.

I honestly believe we are evolution-locked as a species… as long as we cling to this type of thinking. There is something to be said for the balance that happens when men and women work in harmony. We truly compliment each other… but only as equals. And we are way behind schedule on achieving that balance.

Hard fact. There is no nobility in controlling a member of the opposite sex, especially when our physical strength becomes a defining factor. I see men treat women questionably (and sometimes poorly), simply based on that one premise alone. And it’s poisonous to the male psyche as much as it is dangerous to the female in general.

But it takes tremendous strength of character (combined with a healthy amount of humbleness and gratitude) to sit down with the opposite sex and say “You know things I don’t know. You understand aspects of the human experience that I don’t fully grasp. Will you help me understand your perspective, so I can become a better person.”

If we choose to treat each other as equals (in every sense of the word)… I have no doubt this will become an amazing world. I have learned so much (and grown so empathetic), listening to my partner and our daughter’s describe their experiences in this life; and I am a wiser, more balanced person as a result. I believe with all my heart… this really is the healthiest, most loving way to go.

I hope you enjoyed my write-up as well as my latest sonic adventure, ‘Siren’s Trials’.

Welcome to my sonic playground. I don't consider myself a skilled musician. I just sculpt sounds to quiet my mind... and often end up pleasantly surprised. I'm all about joy, and silliness, and staying playful as I (refuse to) grow older. My songs help me remember that. :)

Thank you for taking the time to listen and share in my journey. Best wishes and all my love.
