about

Memento Mori (remember, you must die) is one of best ‘live life to the fullest’ motivators I’ve discovered in the last few decades. But it might not be for the reasons you may think.

Steve Jobs, in his Stanford Commencement speech several years back, summed it up very nicely... “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”... a simple quote he said to himself in front of the mirror every morning, to ensure he was on the right track.

Death might just be the most important aspect of life. It’s the one thing that reminds us our time here is limited; our days are numbered. Like Pet Rocks and Video Rental stores, we won’t last forever. And this is a beautiful thing.

With a few exceptions, humans are very proficient procrastinators. Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow? If the Moody Blues have their math correct, we each get 22,000 days. It’s not a lot, but it’s all you’ve got (from their lyrics). We are far more driven, when facing a deadline, because we seem to focus in more if we know we’re under time constraints. And death is the biggest deadline of them all (it’s even in the word).

Putting all of this into the context of my own personal story... when I watched that Steve Jobs speech in 2005, it was enough of a catalyst that it changed the direction of my life. I ended a career path that was making me miserable (that proved surprisingly easy, once I made up my mind) and I committed some of my free time to learning how to make music (that was strangely scary, because lets be honest... we all suck at first). I started small, QWERTYing my notes in... and I made terrible songs at first. But I was so happy creating them, because I was in alignment with my heart and my desires. The change was so drastic and so effective, I didn’t even get to enjoy my midlife crisis.

I guess the point is.... we’re all going to die. But how many of us will have truly lived? I’m pretty confident I’m preaching to the choir here, since most of us are already here, creating from the heart and sharing those creations. Something inside us recognized the importance of embracing our ravenous creative desires, and we were smart enough to listen. But are there other aspects of our lives we are not living; other desires we are not embracing? This life belongs to us, even if only temporarily. We get to live it the way we want to. Lets remember to check in with ourselves (and each other) and make sure we’re making the most of those 22,000 days. I hope you enjoy my latest midlife-suppressing creation, ‘Memento Mori’. :)

(Oh, and this is another of my oil paintings from about 10 years ago; exploring colors beyond my safe little burnt umber / burnt sienna / titanium white combination. It's also 36"x30", stretched canvas; actually titled 'Memento Mori'... but my family nicknamed it 'The Atomic Angel'.)

Welcome to my sonic playground. I don't consider myself a skilled musician. I just sculpt sounds to quiet my mind... and often end up pleasantly surprised. I'm all about joy, and silliness, and staying playful as I (refuse to) grow older. My songs help me remember that. :)

Thank you for taking the time to listen and share in my journey. Best wishes and all my love.
