You’ll laugh, but I don’t actually watch most horror movies and shows. I’m too squeamish; and jump scares… well, they scare me. Oh sure, I claim to love this season. But it's probably more for historical reasons; not what modern day entertainment has to offer (IE: I'll take Nosferatu over The Walking Dead any day.). But this presents a challenge, because many of my friends on SC are offering up their auditory Halloween treats, using current reference material… and I don't want to miss out. So I decided to create my own little ghost story... with a twist.

This is the story of Giordano Bruno, a man of science and cosmology as well as a Dominican friar, born in Italy in the mid 1500s. It's a common misperception (at least the way I was taught) that he was burned at the stake by the Roman church for his views of a heliocentric (the Sun at the center) rather than geocentric (the Earth at the center) concept of the Universe. But actually, the church was not as bothered by that, as much as it was by all the other established ideas he openly spoke out against. He was burned alive in Rome on Feb 17, 1600 at the age of 52… for challenging the establishment, speaking his mind and heart. And in my imagining, that leaves behind a serious amount of residual negative energy. Anyone who’s watched any ghost shows knows that leads to paranormal activity. ;)

So for this song to work, imagine a world where ghosts like Bruno's still wander, trapped on this plane of existence until their ideas finally become universally accepted. Throughout history, many have died at the hands of powerful organizations, simply for holding a belief different from theirs. And some day in the near future, I believe they will be recognized by all people as the voices that tried to bring us closer to truth, rather than keeping us trapped in antiquated (and in many cases, already disproven) thinking.

This song expresses no opinion about the organizations that hold power over man's thinking. This is about those who have been quieted in order to protect that structure of thinking. The ghost of a person and the ghost of an idea can appear very much the same, and be equally as frightening, to anyone who isn't prepared for such an encounter.
